Stand and Sway

If Dolly Parton and Aretha Franklin had a love child it would be Americana roots duo Stand and Sway. Steeped in soul, poetry, and harmony, Beth Wood and Ara Lee James blend together in a way that tends to break things: ceilings, hearts, ideas about genres. The power of these two voices together is undeniable, and their music changes the weather. If you see them live, prepare for foot-stomping, tear-inducing, mountain-sized joy.

Texan-raised, Oregon-based singer-songwriter Beth Wood has won almost every major songwriting competition in the United States, and with 20 years of touring and 11 studio albums under her belt, she’s done. With anything that doesn’t bring her joy. So she’s added writing books and publishing poetry and teaching songwriting to pass the torch of music for music’s sake. Beth’s second book of poetry, Ladder to the Light, is the winner of the 2019 Oregon Book Awards Readers’ Choice Award and was a finalist for the Stafford/Hall award for poetry. Beth’s mission is to raise the vibration through word and sound - through creativity and music as a spiritual practice. When you see her live you’ll taste this, and you’ll understand why Beth has long been one of the most beloved singer-songwriters in the industry.

Appalachia-raised, Washington-based Ara Lee James is a singer, poet, and truth-teller with an unmistakable sound, commanding presence, and a voice that will leave you speechless. Ara has been singing professionally for over 20 years as an award-winning soloist, studio vocalist, and songwriter (formerly Ara Lee). Often called a “force of nature,” Lee believes the human voice has the power to reach through walls of dogma and speak beauty to power. Rooted in the traditions of gospel and deep South soul, Ara holds court on stage like a modern-day mystic. When you see her live you’ll wonder what just happened to you, and you will understand why Beth grabbed her after a show and said “We have to work together.”

Wood and James Stand and Sway. They also teach and mentor, leading OPEN SONG workshops in conjunction with their tours to help people uncover their musical selves because they believe that creativity is magical, abundant, and available to everyone. Stand and Sway’s upcoming album, “DEEP BLUE”, is set to be released in the fall of 2019.

Michelle Malone

Michelle Malone is an award-winning American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer in the rock, folk, blues and pop idioms. She is also the founder of SBS Records.

Malone was born and raised in Atlanta, GA by a musician mother with whom she toured in the summers. She grew up listening to her mother and grandmother sing in the church choir every Sunday when they werent on the road. She dropped out of high school at 16 and ran away from home.  After a few brushes with the law, she went back to high school and became the valedictorian. She attended Agnes Scott College with dreams of becoming a doctor, but was offered a record deal with Clive Davis at Arista Records, which looked alot more interesting than more school.

When it came time to craft her own sound, she took those religious and secular roots, blended in enough folk, rock and blues to satisfy, and came up with a rootsy high-spirited sound that brings acoustic and electric slide and passionate vocals together harkening back to the lost recordings of Bonnie Raitt, Susan Tedeschi and Lucinda Williams fronting The Rolling Stones.

He continues his storied career with continual reinvention and true conviction on his 11th album, Juke Joint at the Edge of the World.

Velvet Goldfish - We want to play music, meet cool people, make some money to buy more equipment and NOT give it all to our kids. Anything you can do to help with those four things would be greatly appreciated. Especially the first one. 2009 - Bob, “Dude, you play?”. Larry, “Yeah, you?” Bob, “You sing?” Larry, “No, but Jeanna does.” And randomly one night after a jam session, Velvet Goldfish was hatched and grew quickly into a “Oh yeah!! Let’s play that! It’s cool!!” Band.

Wake Forest Chamber of Commerce

Sound Runner's provides the PA system for business meetings and events.

The festival grew out of the Art of Cool Project, a Durham nonprofit founded by biostatistician Cicely Mitchell and trumpeter Al Strong, which presents and promotes jazz to local audiences as well as helping foster jazz education among young musicians. The April festival has always relied heavily on community support, turning to crowdfunding campaigns to fill in some financial gaps. Last year, the festival clashed with the city of Durham over its funding for the corporate-backed Moogfest; the city seemed to snub the festival grown in its backyard in favor of a big out-of-town business that had a history of hemorrhaging money. But after community outcry, the city came through for Art of Cool. Now the festival is as steady as ever, and its roots, which once seemed tenuous, are taking firm hold.
